The Problem:
Jetted tubs have about 15-20 feet of plumbing lines under
the tub for air and water circulation.
These plumbing lines are full of warm stagnant water after each bath. The tub should be cleaned with Oh Yuk
one a month ensuring these lines have been cleaned out and are safe for your
family to use.
The Solution:
If Oh Yuk is used properly it will help to ensure a
clean and safe bathing experience. Biofilm, which contains bacteria, mold,
oils, and leftover cleaners, is constantly growing in the jetted tub’s plumbing
lines. If the plumbing lines are kept clean from the start, and cleaned regularly,
biofilm will not form. If you do not use a cleaner specifically designed to
address these issues, you will be bathing in high levels of unsafe bacteria and
mold.
This is a picutre of the stuff you can see come out of your plumbing lines if they are not cleaned regularly.

What happens if you do not use the right cleaner?
Bleach (sodium hypochlorite), vinegar, soap and
detergents will not clean your jetted tub. These products not only can’t
properly clean the plumbing lines, they will make the situation worse by
becoming a food source for the biofilm in the lines. Regular cleaning of your
jetted tub’s plumbing lines will keep the water in your tub as safe as tap
water.
This is an image from Montana State University Bozeman's Center For Biofilm Engineering showing that chlorine cannot even penetrate the outer layers of the biofilm:
